Gavison may lose Supreme Court seat

The National Council of the Israel Bar Association chose its new representatives for the Judges' Selection Committee on Tuesday. According to the most recent tally, Professor Ruth Gavison likely will not be appointed to the Supreme Court.

The Bar's new members are Yori Guy-Ron and Pinhas Marinsky. Although the latter would likely vote for Gavison when her appointment is brought before the committee, Guy-Ron's objection appears to be sealing her fate, Army Radio reported.

Among the other seven members of the Judges' Selection Committee, the three Supreme Court justices and Labor MK Avraham Shochat oppose Gavizon. Committee chairman Justice Minister Tzipi Livni, Health Minister Danny Naveh and National Religious Party MK Shaul Yahalom support her.

Because Livni was in the minority on this matter, she refused to convene the Judges' Selection Committee for 11 months, even though there have been two vacancies on the Supreme Court for almost a year.

However, with elections approaching and pressure mounting on her to fill the vacancies, Livni scheduled a committee meeting in January to appoint at least two new justices. The only hope she has of passing Gavizon's appointment is if both new Israel Bar Association representatives support her.
